Traveling Books Project
Toronto, CANADA - Who said letter writing was a lost art? This submission allows you to dive into the art of handwriting and letter-writing while fostering just the sort of connectedness we need these days. Wherever you are in the world join the Traveling Books Project. Get the instructions at www.travelingbooks.co
“Love Travels Far”
Vancouver, CANADA - File this inspiring art video under “silver linings.” Videographer Steve Hawkins wanted to spread hope. The streets of Vancouver were becoming bleaker and bleaker. People were few and store windows were boarded up. His idea was to use these boarded up storefronts as canvasses to bring “optimism for the future through art.”
Newcomer Week: Virtual Edition May 18-22
Toronto, Ontario, CANADA - After the cancellation of Toronto’s annual Newcomer Day celebration, which celebrates newcomers’ contributions to the city and introduces them different city-wide services, the Toronto Arts Foundation and the Neighbourhood Arts Network decided to put together this incredible, virtual week-long celebration of art around the city. You get everything from visual art to music to discussions about creativity and culture, and it looks AMAZING. Everyday from May 18-22, you can experience a different event over Zoom!
“Drift” Exhibition Behind Closed Doors
West Vancouver, CANADA - This submission is truly inspiring. Listening to these artists talk about their art and how so quickly they adapted to the pandemic to share their work is just what we need now. From the submission: “Drift” showcases drawings and mixed-media by Bettina Harvey and photography by Judy E. Witheford. Thematically, the complimentary works of these two artists explore perceptions and impressions of the natural world and the visual imprints, fragments and remnants that embody the passage of time.
UNO Fest Online
Victoria, CANADA - In 1998, Intrepid Theatre launched Uno Fest – a curated festival of one-person theatre held annually in May. This year’s festival, which was to feature eight solo shows from across Canada, will no longer be in-person but online. UNO Fest has always pushed the boundaries of what solo performance can be, so they are embracing their festival tagline: Theatre outside the lines.
Designs from the Segal Centre’s Production of “Oslo”
Montreal, CANADA - Called a “riveting political thriller” by the Associated Press, the Tony Award winning play “Oslo“ was slated to open at the Segal Centre in Montreal this spring. They’ve submitted some wonderful work by their designers, giving us a rare opportunity to look behind the scenes of play production.
New Work at The Philadelphia Orchestra
Philadelphia, UNITED STATES - In honour of Beethoven’s 250th birthday, the Philadelphia Orchestra, in partnership with the Gabriela Lena Frank Creative Academy of Music, was set to perform four new compositions that were in conversation with the work of Beethoven. While some pieces, such as Iman Habibi’s Jeder Baum spricht (in the video above) were played to an empty house, others never got to be played at all. Composer and pianist Iman Habibi was he kind enough to send a video of his great work along to us.
These Toronto theatre artists are KILLING it.
Toronto, CANADA - These Toronto-based theatre creators and performers are keeping their skills honed and spirits high in spite of facing disappointing and discouraging news. Show them some LOVE!
GROW - A New Canadian Musical
London/Toronto, CANADA - Folks all over were eagerly anticipating the opening of Grow (Book-Matt Murray; Music-Colleen Dauncey; Lyrics-Akiva Romer Segal) at the Grand Theatre in London, ON. This was a show with BUZZ, having been developed at the prestigious Canadian Music Theatre Project and the Goodspeed Festival of New Musicals, and it sadly had to be postponed. Thats why we were so thrilled when the team made this video for The Social Distancing Festival (video credit- Fred Miller III). Check out The One I Choose, sung by composer Colleen Dauncey.
