Youssef Elgohary

Toronto, ON, CANADA - This submission from Artist, Youssef Elgohary, utilizes the familiar colours of beloved social media platforms to make a statement criticizing them. Take a deep dive into some subject matter that we’re hardwired to believe is only for casual wading.

From the Artist: “The Incubators” artwork is made of mixed media on wood panels. It describes the state of attachment and dependency on cellphones and social media, and the inability to differentiate between the real world and the virtual one. Each wood panel represents a social media platform.

Bio from the Artist: Youssef Elgohary is inspired by the emotions and crises of the mystic realm within the abstract human being in relation to the material world. Born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1988, he graduated from Cairo University in 2010 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. However, art has been his all-time passion. After graduation, the tedious corporate work did not satisfy his creative urges. Hence, he decided to study art in order to pursue his quest as a visual artist, and transition from amateur to professional. Accordingly, he had art classes in the American University in Cairo, in the School of Continuing Education, with the renowned Egyptian artist, Ayman El Semary. Then, he had additional classes with the Egyptian artists, Farida Darwish and Samy Abdallah until he started to develop his own style and direction in 2015. In March 2018, he moved to Canada aspiring for better art opportunities. Elgohary participated in several exhibitions in Cairo and Toronto. He also worked on several mural projects in Toronto.
