Someone’s in here

Montréal, QC, CANADA - I feel like so many of us see isolation as a cold and lonely affair, when a silver lining could possibly be the relationships we’re fostering with ourselves. This submission by Artist, Alissa Zilber, depicts bodies alone in space, but their inner worlds are suggested through the Artists filter, highlighting a vibrancy that we might otherwise let pass by.

From the Artist: ‘Someone’s in here’ is a series of paintings I made over 2019 and 2020. I began thinking about how a bathroom is the one place where a person can truly be alone. Then, with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and the enforcement of social distancing, suddenly I found myself, like many others, spending more time alone in different domestic spaces. I began drawing solitary scenes in other settings, with the same interest in expressing how a person’s emotional interior animates their physical interior. While learning to navigate loneliness during this socially distanced time, we are all confronting the discomfort of our only consistent companion—ourselves.

I made these paintings using acrylic paint on paper. They’re all roughly 15 x 10 in.
