Bio from the Artist: ROXANE FALLAH is an architect, computational designer and immersive boundary designer who’s interdisciplinary work focuses on creating scalable alternate borders for self. Working at the intersection of fashion, architecture and interaction design she creates sculptural wearables that in an embodied interaction trigger sensual responses for the human. Integrating cognitive technologies and distributed intelligence in material bodies enables her to construct adaptive boundaries with transformative/communication powers. Moreover, through implementation of emerging technologies (including sensors, processors and actuators) she explores a way of communication between subjective human beings and the objective border surrounding her/him in a way that each influences and transforms the other.
However, recently COVID crisis has had a huge influence on her work as well as all other artists. Since her creative works of art are mostly designed for performances as they are interactive pieces that are enabled with human interactions, due to art fairs closed down she is facing a huge challenge exhibiting her art work. However, this challenging time created the possibility for her to focus more on digital art and creating contents that are reflections of this new normal and are addressing social and psychological effects of Covid on the formation of metaphoric and physical boundaries.
Description from Artist: In a complex interplay between components of a system, adaptation and reflexivity shape a body’s dynamic boundaries. SOCIAL PHOBIC SKIN is a project designed as a conscious skin which behaves by inflating and deflating air and in response to moving objects in its relative environment. As the notion of “structural coupling” given by the theory of “autopoiesis”, an autonomous and strictly bounded system is shaped extensively by its interactions with environment over time, just as the environment has been shaped by its interactions with the system. In the SOCIAL PHOBIC SKIN project, the process of continuing adaptation is achieved through the use of computational tools and technologies which enable designed skin to dynamically transform in response to real-time changes in their environment. In this project information shapes physical borders of humans and boundaries undergo continuous construction and reconstruction. The core question behind this project is: How can we imagine having a wearable infused with information which can develop an understanding of the user and space that surrounds her/him and can perform as an extension of her/his mind and behave in response to change?
