Under A Soprano Sky

Atlanta, Georgia, UNITED STATES - I feel really, really privileged to be able to exhibit the work of our first FEATURED ARTIST, Lisa Whittington. Her work is emotional, political, and unforgettable. Please check it out, and be prepared to be moved. See more of Lisa’s work on her website, Insta, and Twitter.

FROM THE ARTIST:

I am dedicated to serving my culture through my art and documenting the experiences of being Black in America. When I am creating, I feel as though I am keeping a journal for African Americans. It feels so important to me. Sometimes my work feels like performances when I am done. Black people have been through so much and I like for people to learn something about my people when looking at my art. During the quarantine, I got to spend more time in my studio and became even more committed to documenting the Black experience.

These artworks, many created since the onset of the Black Lives Matter Movement, tackles culture, place, her life, and the politics of being Black in America. Lisa Whittington intriguingly executes her subject matter through figurative mixed-media abstract expressionism to make unforgettable and strong statements with her art. The artwork “Under A Soprano Sky” won Best in Show at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Airport in 2020 and the artwork “I Am A Man a Man I Am” has exhibited at several museums and galleries in the United States.
