Melanie Tassone has done something very cool:
a virtual art exhibition.
A click of this link will teleport you to a gorgeous art exhibition with a lot to say.
Words from Melanie:
I am Melanie Tassone, a graduate student studying Arts Administration at Eastern Michigan University, and I have been facilitating a research of which this exhibition has played crucial role in its development. This exhibition was due to open on March 13th until March 27th, but because EMU is closed until April 1st, the show will not be open. Because of this, the exhibition has been transferred to an online virtual tour. The concept for Wom^n: Women’s Representation of Visual Art stems from the Bechdel Test created by Alison Bechdel-the cartoonist of the comic strip Dykes to Watch Out For. The Bechdel Test is a pass or fail test designed to evaluate women’s roles in film under three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, who (2) who talk to each other, about (3) something besides a man. I have been working to develop new criteria specific to visual art that extends beyond motion picture. The main interest for Wom^n is the different perceptions of women in visual images by showcasing work by many talented women artists from across the country in effort to push forth the idea that representations of women are not uniformly idealized despite what society has ingrained within us.
The artist turn-out and interest in attendance has been nothing short of extraordinary. COVID-19 will not stand in our way of sharing this body of work despite taking the necessary precautions of closing the gallery. There is a positive experience that has risen under such circumstances, and that is how we as curators and as art organizations can still deliver art into the world under instances where our everyday public lives are disrupted. I am proud to present Wom^n as an online exhibition and photo gallery for you to view in the safety and comfort of your own homes. A necessary step to ensure artistic efforts remain unthwarted by unfortunate events we face now and in the future.
