Vancouver, BC, CANADA - Submitted to us by the Sunzen Art Gallery in Vancouver, we are so excited to be sharing this STUNNING collection of Chinese Underglaze Blue and Red porcelain from an exhibit that was cancelled due to social distancing. All of the pieces featured were created by artists who are trained in and value the craftsmanship of porcelain-making. Based on the old Chinese philosophy and value of “humble and honest for three generations”, Sunzen’s goal is to engage a diverse community with the vibrancy of Asian arts and culture. Take a look!

From the submission: "Beyond the Luster of China - Contemporary Porcelain from the House of Chunfeng Xiangyu" is an exhibition initially planned to open on March 26th, 2020 in Sunzen Art Gallery, Vancouver. Curated by the gallery team, this exhibition features porcelains from the best artists and studios who value the historical culture of porcelain-making, and practice this craftsmanship with novel aesthetics and interpretation. Over forty pieces of Blue and Red Underglaze porcelain, Blue-and-White porcelain and Famille-Rose porcelain will be showcased, with their making techniques, cultural references and symbolic meanings explained. 

The exhibition never opened due to the government order of non-essential business closure. Therefore, we have moved this exhibition to online and have developed series of video guided tours along with our virtual viewing room. The exhibition is also divided into three series and will be published throughout four weeks. The two Panel talks are moved to online as well, aiming to help audiences know more about this heritage culture, and engage with the craftsmen, curators and the exhibited pieces. 

The first series presents selective Underglaze Blue and Red Porcelains from studio Chunfeng Xiangyu. Mastering the complex Underglaze Blue and Red Porcelain making technique, Chunfeng Xiangyu revamps the beauty of the traditional ceramics in China, and also makes bold innovations at the same time, allowing contemporary characteristics in their archaistic porcelain masterpieces.
