Hsiao-Chu (Julia) Hsia

Long Island City, NY, USA - Wrap yourself in this submission from Performance Artist, Hsiao-Chu, or Julia, Hsia. Watching a body move in tandem with it’s environment has left me with a grounded and refreshing energy.

Bio from the Artist: With a psychology background, Hsiao-Chu Hsia, also Julia Hsia, focuses on relational art and investigates the development of the psychology of art/ psychological art which is based on Gestalt psychology. After pursuing her Master’s degree in Community Arts at Maryland Institute College of Art, she is now working as a freelance artist in the New York City area. Julia tends to utilize body language and interactions in her performances in order to build each of her performances into a mind-open space for audiences to not only think but to have a conversation about the message she gives out through the process. As an artist and educator, Julia values the time that an artist spends on building relationships with communities. This is the way she connects and becomes a part of the people which allows her to see relationships between and social issues clearly.

Same as everyone, experiencing the unexpected pandemic, Julia copes with it by collaborating with different artists and organizations remotely. Although the pandemic brought negative impacts initially and pulled people further from each other physically, it expanded the range and possibility of connecting with people around the world virtually.

Description from the Artist: As a performance artist, Julia responds to the environment and society with her body language, movements, and actions. She talks about her relationships with life, time, and relationships between humans and nature.
For Julia, the presence of a person is essentially a performance that is presenting in front of others. She tends to observe, feel, and find inspiration through living as a human. She sees how we make decisions, behave, and live influence each other and impact the earth. Our relationships are locked one and another. Eventually, she performs to visualize what she perceives and what she wants to talk about with people.
