She Series

Calgary, CANADA - This work is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. We don’t post much student work, but when we do… it’s exceptional. Simone Elizabeth Saunders is in her final year at the Alberta University of the Arts. Her work is inspiring, political, colourful, and thought-provoking.

Here’s what SImone said:

I am a graduating student from the Alberta University of the Arts. It has been so humbling experiencing COVID-19, numbing things down and looking at what really matters. But, there are disappointments. My graduating show for May-June has been cancelled. My convocation to celebrate with my peers has been cancelled. I look to festivals like the Social Distancing Festival to stay inspired and in touch with our vibrant global community.

I create large rug-tufted and punch-needled textiles. The SHE Series involves portraiture of women of colour who are, or were, advocates and leaders within their communities. I embrace vivid colours and patterns to explore the vivacity of womanhood.

Simone is also an actor and a founding member of the first Afrocentric theatre company in Western Canada, Ellipsis Tree Collective. Simone was elected by her peers at the Alberta University of the Arts for the role of President of the Students’ Association for the 2018-19 school year. She was recognized by the Alberta Government in receiving the Laurence Decore Award for Student Leadership in 2019.
